Why I do not buy beauty products containing mineral oil

If you look closer at the composition of mainstream/classical beauty products (body lotion, oil, face cream etc..), you will very often notice that "mineral oil" or "paraffinum liquidum" or " petrolatum" is at the top position of the list, which means that it is the "base" or main ingredient of the product. Wondering why?

Mineral oil is:  -  highly refined
                    -  super cheap for the manufacturers
                    -  really easy to use
                    -  stable over time

But here is the "drama". Have you thought if mineral oil is good for your skin and is a "real cosmetic" ingredients? not really? Let me clarify it for you.

Paraffin is:    -  made of hydrocarbures
                    -  useless at providing any benefits for the skin
                    -   lacking of vitamins and nutrients
                    -  occlusive for the skin
                    -  not well tolerated if you have an allergy-prone type skin
                    -  totally "anti-beauty oil"

It is very easy to check the "quality" of a beauty product by looking at whether or not the product contains mineral oil or paraffin.

To conclude: I personally always opt for face cream or body lotion that contain organic virgin plant oils such as olive, jojoba, or sweet almond oils (or others) as their main carrier
The gentle extraction method preserves the quality and the content of each oil, ensuring that vitamins and fatty acids are conserved.
A real plus your skin: botanical nutrients + protection!

Happy face - Sugared Beauty

A little while ago, I was lucky to win "Happy Face" on Twitter. Wondering what "Happy Face" is?
Let me tell you.

Sarah Zhan founder of Sugared Beauty promptly sent me my gift: a delicious foaming scrub cleanser. I was super excited to receive it and to try it the following days.
Sugared Beauty is a small beauty company based in Pensylvania, USA, created in 2008. The enthusiasm and the nice customer service I had, gave me straight away a very positive sign.

Product description: deluxe handmade foaming scrub cleanser
Certified: no
For: all skin types
Texture: grany and soft mixture
Price: around £9.5 for 120ml

My opinion

I love exfoliators, this is not a secret. It helps skin to improve cell renewal and ultimately gives that soft and smooth finish. Having a sensitive skin myself, it is important that the product I use, do not "rub" the face too much and leave it clean and supple.

"Happy face" promises to be a super gentle skin multitasker: cleanser, exfoliator, and moisturiser. Sounds great!
When applied on the skin, "Happy Face" gently transforms into a delicate and very soft mousse. The grains are tiny enough not to over strip or irritate the skin, while the mousse amazingly brings an extra comfort to the face. This is probably due to the presence of nourishing plant oils such as jojoba or olive oil. I really enjoyed using this product and I think that I have never been that enthousiastic about a scrub!
What I also really like, is that the product is freshly made; the sticker along with the date of fabrication is a proof.
What a special treat and what a fresh product!

The smell is very nice and discrete. This is an extra benefit if you are a sensitive to strong fragrances.

If you are looking for a negative side of this product, I would say that I still put my daily moisturiser after using "Happy Face" to complete the nice treatment.

My overall rating: 9/10

... made my face really happy !

What are you thoughts about this product? And about exfoliation in general? What are you star products?

Composition: fairly traded finely sifted organic sugar, potassium cocoate, olea europaea (olive) oil, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) oil, vitis vinifera (grapeseed) oil, organic aloe vera, rosemary extract.

Olive oil is the beauty oil by excellence, soothes and repairs any sensitive skins.

Jojoba oil is a delight for a skin. It soothes and gently soften without leaving any greasy feeling.

Grapeseed oil is rich in antioxidants and vitamins and presents anti-ageing benefits.

Aloe vera highly moisturises skin thanks to its fabulous composition.

Potassium cocoate derives from the coconut and acts as a gentle foaming agent that removes dirts and impurities.

Rosemary extract acts as a natural preservative for oils.
